“And behold, some men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and lay him before Jesus, but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. And when he saw their faith, he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”
I know this is obscure to point out in this passage, but it is where my heart is…do you have a friend like this? One who will expend energy for the sake of your well being? One who will carry you when you are limping or lame? One who will compel…even physically bring you to a place of healing? One who has faith enough to take you to the One who sees past the outward appearance to the heart? Even if you have only one, you are blessed indeed.
I have a few who have proven themselves through the years…I can probably count them on one hand. These are the kind who will sing to you when your heart aches…and not pretty platitudes of how “it will all get better”…but songs of solid, plant-your-feet-on-it gospel truth of the God who is our Mighty Fortress. These friends will be a safe place for you…where no pretense is required. They will speak truth to you always…even hard things…but always in love. They will never encourage you to lean entirely upon themselves for strength…they will shove you, little faithless fledgeling, out of that nest of fear so that you may soar with wings as eagles.
If you have a friend like this, thank the giver of every good and perfect gift. If you do not…pray for one, and in faith set a place at your table for the friends you have not yet met.
“Oil & perfume make the heart glad, and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel” (Prov 27:9)
