“And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region.”
“They were afraid. ” This was not a comfortable idea. No one had done this sort of thing before. They were not sure what to think. This wasn’t customary.
We fear what we do not understand. We humans like a life with lots of safety nets and timelines. Check lists. Back up plans. But this is not the life of faith. We need to ask for discernment when we are tempted to doubt. Just because something does not appeal to our reason or affections does not mean it is not good. How many times has God done things that were absolutely contrary to reason?
Think of the gospel…God’s plan of salvation. Is that according to reason? Nope. Man thinks he must pay his own way, earn his ticket to Heaven. God provided a way by grace, through faith, plus nothing. God does not operate according to our plans. He’s not obligated to run His ideas by us for approval. That means that it may be possible that His plans won’t make logical sense to us (at least at the onset)…and they may not get an approving nod from those around you, either. Be prepared. The life of faith will not be one that is easily understood by everyone. You’ll need to get comfortable in your own spiritual skin.
“They began to beg Jesus to depart.” Because of the reasons given above, because this was “outside their box”…way beyond their comfort zone….they wanted no more of it. They wanted Him gone. How often we rob ourselves of blessing and benefit…of some very precious “good and perfect gifts” because they may not come wrapped as we would prefer. We wither on the vine, we do not thrive, because God does not stroke our sensibilities. If you have not yet noticed, He’s not much about comfort and coddling. We are soldiers.
From subtle love of softening things,
From easy choices, weakenings,
(Not thus are spirits fortified,
Not this way went the Crucified)
From all that dims Thy Calvary
O Lamb of God, deliver me. ~Amy Carmichael
