This phrase from the book of Titus never fails to grab my attention when I read it.
At this season of the year when much emphasis is placed upon adornment, and we trim our trees, and hang our lights, arrange our tinsel, and curl the ribbon on our presents, and attempt all manner of decorating and culinary feats of Martha Stewart proportions…are we adorning the testimony of our God in our homes and churches and communities by beautiful service, loving gestures, and sharing the wonder of the lavishly “free Gift“?
This Black Friday we saw some appalling behavior in the news amongst Christmas shoppers. Grievous, embarrassing behavior which points to the greed and selfishness in the heart of every human being. That is what we are, by nature.
Let’s demonstrate giving this Christmas season. Selfless giving which delights in delighting others. This is what was done for us when “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.” He had nothing to gain but reconciliation with His poor fallen creation, so that He might bless them even further. Let’s adore Him by adorning Him. Let’s rejoice and celebrate the Gift we’ve already been given.
