For those reading, my pastor's comment is in response to "<a href="http://strengthfortoday.wordpress.com/2009/12/02/self-esteem-getting-it-right/" rel="nofollow">Self Esteem: Getting It Right"</a>.

Bro Tim,
No, I cannot imagine that. Most times when I hear the words from scripture read, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant," it makes me teary. I think this is what it is really all about, after all. Wanting it. Because we only measure with fallen, finite minds, we'll never know if we've reached it. If we think we have, we most certainly haven't. If we think we haven't, we persevere.

It is very much for this reason that I like, more and more, Ron Hamilton’s song “I Saw Jesus in You.” Can you contemplate the meaning of someone saying that to you? I doubt it will ever be said of me, but I strive every day for Him to be so much there that it might. I strive to let Him be there, to let Him make himself home in me.

I was criticized for preaching submission and obedience so strongly. The hearts self interest and pride criticize the submission and obedient faith one must have for God, His Son, and the Holy Spirit’s conviction. You are so right.

Hey Tom,
Neat to see you here. Now you see what I do for my "hobby" to keep my writing skills honed until "someday" when I can devote real time to it again. I am grateful for the faithful testimonies of both of my brothers. Without that influence, I had no other gospel witness. God is good.

Love from your "favorite" sister. :)

Hi Sis,

I came across your blog by accident. It is neat to read your testimony! As with Mom's salvation, I am glad to have played a very small part in your ultimate salvation. Dave's salvation was one of the factors that got my attention and God used other ingredients to bring me to Christ on that beach in Glyfada, Greece. Yes, as a young servicemen in a distant land I felt the earnestness to see the rest of my family come to know Christ. He had brought me to Himself and so all the Christianity I knew was to share the greatest gift the world has ever received, salvation in Christ. So from afar your brother mailed you a dose of Christian Concentrate - the way of salvation. Praise His name for bringing you to your own personal realization of Him. Each pathway is diverse but the destination is blessed.

Love,

Well, I for one believe that this is unresolved in scripture. I would not say it goes back to John Calvin, but rather that the sovereignty of God is present in scripture as well as the responsibility of man. It is one of those things that "belongs to God". I think this is deliberate on God's part so that we do not become too reckless or complacent ("whatever will be will be" not in a fatalistic manner, but in a "God will do what He chooses, regardless of what I do"), nor too controlling or arrogant. Perhaps that is where sayings like, "Pray as if everything is up to God; plan as if everything is up to you" come from. In either case, I hope you enjoy a safe holiday giving thanks for a God who cannot be entirely figured out by finite human beings. :)

I forgot to mention, that post was not intended as sarcasm or humor, even though it may appear to be one or the other. I don't know where I stand on this topic. It seems to me that whichever side is correct, then wouldn't it affect all areas of life? If we are going to live our lives either as Armenians or Calvinists, shouldn't we believe that those issues affect every area of life?
